International Famagusta Art-Culture Festival
Summertime in Northern Cyprus is festival time! Every year, from May through to September, festivals and events of all types burst forth across the island, spreading joy and happiness to locals and visitors alike. Among them is the International Famagusta Art & Culture Festival, which runs for 3 weeks during June and July in and around the ancient Cypriot city of Famagusta. If you plan on visiting this year’s event, now in its 14th year, it is highly recommended that you book your hotel in advance of travel. North Cyprus hotels reviews are a good starting point for your trip.
Festival Information
The International Famagusta Art & Culture Festival is an entertainment extravaganza. Music, theatre, dance and other performing arts take centre stage in the city, the focus of which is the wonderful outdoor arena provided by the ancient Salamis Theatre. Performers of international standing work alongside the very best national talent from Northern Cyprus and Turkey to deliver performances that entertain and inspire.
In 2009 internationally acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter Loreena McKennitt opened the festival at the Salamis theatre. Other performers included Zuhal Olcay, Gypsy Devils and Teoman. There were also performances of the Marriage of Figaro in Turkish language and Antonio Najarro Dance Company’s Jazzing Flamenco – a visual spectacular that fused Jazz with Spanish dance.
At the time of writing the line up for the 2010 festival is yet to be announced. But given that performers as notable as Bonnie Tyler, Boney M, Monica Molina, Pink Martini and Cesaria Evora have all performed at the Famagusta Art & Culture Festival in the past, we can rest assured that there will be some top names from the world of entertainment making an appearance here.
